Solar-Utility Collaboration Accelerates Solar Adoption
Vivint Solar works with utilities to enable consumers to generate their own renewable energy and export excess energy to the grid, often through net energy metering billing agreements. Net metering allows the homeowner to receive credits for any energy their system produces that is not consumed on-site and is instead exported to the grid. These credits can be used at a later time to help offset the homeowner’s utility bill. Homeowners use energy from the grid when solar panels produce insufficient power for their consumption needs.

Developing A Smarter Grid
Distributed solar contributes to a smarter, healthier grid system. The benefits to the grid include:

  • Avoidance of costs associated with electricity transmission and distribution – Rooftop solar power does not need to travel hundreds of miles to homes. Likewise, because rooftop solar power does not need to be distributed throughout the utility’s circuits, if customers are not using their own solar energy, their neighbors on the same transformer line can consume it. In some cases where new residential developments increase utility demand, distributed rooftop solar can avoid the need to perform very costly transmission line and infrastructure upgrades.
  • Reduced peak demand costs – Creating the ability for consumers to generate and store solar energy in on-site batteries helps to distribute power back to the grid when it is needed to smooth out the duck curve. In this way costly utility peaker plant capacity requirements can be reduced.
  • Grid stability – Smart solar inverter technology, along with other demand response equipment that is becoming more common in residential solar energy systems, provides material benefits to improving utility grid infrastructure and stability.
