According to the U.S. Census Bureau, Spanish is spoken at home by nearly 45 million Americans – more than twice as many as in 1990. This Smart Energy Snapshot Survey explores how the interests and needs of Spanish-speaking consumers differ from the U.S. general population and reveals insights for electricity providers on how to best engage these consumers in programs and services.
Fielded to a nationally representative sample of 501 respondents who speak Spanish at home at least half of the time, the survey found that Spanish speakers are significantly more likely to struggle to pay their electric bills than the general population (37 percent vs. 25 percent, respectively). In addition, about a quarter of Spanish speakers say they have never received marketing materials or outreach in Spanish from their electricity providers or other entities.
