Landis+Gyr is a leading global provider of integrated energy management solutions. They measure and analyze energy utilization to generate empowering analytics for smart grid and infrastructure management, enabling utilities and consumers to reduce energy consumption. Their innovative and proven portfolio of software, services and intelligent sensor technology is a key driver to decarbonize the grid. Having enabled nine million tons of CO2 savings in 2024 through their product offerings, Landis+Gyr manages energy better – since 1896.
A longtime leader in AMI, Landis+Gyr is innovating applications for utilities and consumers at the grid edge.
The North American electric grid is facing an unprecedented increase in energy demand to power growth in AI data centers, electrification of transportation, and more. This has thrown a spotlight on necessary upgrades to transmission and distribution systems, but just as importantly, has highlighted the need for improvements on the grid edge, where power is consumed.
Landis+Gyr, an innovator in metering since the late 19th century, was first to develop a grid edge sensing meter, Revelo®, capable of waveform data streaming and onboard processing. With access to a nonstop stream of high-resolution data, the sensor uses machine learning and AI algorithms to pinpoint anomalies and provide a real-time picture of distribution system performance. It also enables accurate, in-the-moment load disaggregation, while improving the utility’s situational awareness at the grid edge.
For energy consumers, grid edge intelligence provides more flexibility in how they manage energy use and more effective use of rate plans that provide incentives for cost savings. Better understanding of power usage by appliance can also improve the accuracy of home energy audits, even allowing consumers to identify failing appliances, such as heat pumps and water heaters, that can be a leading factor in driving high energy bills.
For the utility, grid-sensing capabilities from a network of edge sensors not only assist overall planning functions – including the sizing, placement and troubleshooting of critical infrastructure – they also support power quality monitoring, outage prevention and load management functions for improved reliability and customer service.
Equipped with edge computing power and an app ecosystem that supports a variety of use cases, the Revelo platform has set the bar for the next generation of AMI technology. This technology is supported by secure, interoperable and flexible communication options for utilities and consumers to access and utilize data like never before.
Flexible Communications
As an early supporter of open standards for smart grid networks and devices, Landis+Gyr offers a Wi-SUN-certified network suite that allows utilities to choose network components from other certified vendors. Interoperable technology is crucial to providing choices for utilities and consumers, as well as for offering best-fit communication platforms, including RF mesh networks, public and private cellular, and Wi-Fi.
From Meter to Smartphone
A modern digital grid ultimately requires direct connection to the internet and, by extension, to smart devices. Landis+Gyr’s Revelo platform includes Wi-Fi connectivity, allowing apps on the meter to connect to cloud servers which in turn can feed data to smart phone apps. Sensing devices can also communicate with smart load-switching technology, such as the SPAN Panel and heavy appliances like EV chargers.
Landis+Gyr’s App ecosystem encourages app development by utility and private programmers, as well as other smart grid vendors. To enhance the consumer engagement features of smart grid technology, for example, Landis+Gyr partnered with Sense, an established provider of home energy monitoring equipment, to provide these capabilities through Revelo platform. Such applications provide a direct link, via smartphone app, to real-time tracking of appliances and other energy loads within the home. This is useful not only to provide insights into how and when energy is used, but also to provide a way for users to remotely check the safety and security of their homes.
In addition to apps, utilities have access to a variety of analytic programs designed to measure data over time to detect anomalies or confirm assumptions about grid design and operation.
Beyond Electric: Advancing Smart City Solutions
While Landis+Gyr has long been recognized for its leadership in electric energy solutions, the company continues to diversify its North American portfolio – most recently with the introduction of the G480 ultrasonic gas meter. Widely adopted across Europe, this compact and lightweight technology offers advanced capabilities, including pressure and temperature sensing, leak detection and remote shutoff, bringing true smart metering innovation to the gas sector.
Landis+Gyr also provides advanced metering modules for water meters that operate on the same mesh network as the electric meters, allowing muti-commodity utilities to extract more value from their network and software investments.
The technology and automation that are key to transitioning to a cleaner, more reliable energy future are being deployed by utilities across North America and the world. Landis+Gyr continues to work with utilities worldwide to supply products and services that support the integration of new energy resources, encourage consumer engagement and help utilities deliver affordable energy for their customers.
