Member Spotlight
In 2026, we will recognize one member each month, providing an organizational profile and highlighting the member's accomplishments in the smart energy space.
Tri-County Electric Cooperative (TCEC), headquartered in Hooker, Oklahoma, is a member-owned, not-for-profit electric distribution cooperative serving approximately 12,000 members and 23,000 meters across Oklahoma, Kansas, Texas and Colorado. With a strong commitment to reliability, transparency and innovation, TCEC continues to evolve to better serve its diverse, multi-state membership.
Electric cooperatives nationwide are rethinking how they connect with members – and TCEC is no exception. By leveraging innovative rate designs, renewable offerings and advanced technologies, the cooperative is creating more flexible and engaging experiences.
One of the most impactful initiatives is TCEC’s Residential Time-of-Use (TOU) program, which encourages members to shift their energy consumption to off-peak hours. By offering significantly lower rates outside peak demand times, the program empowers members to take greater control of their energy bills while supporting grid efficiency. This pricing design not only promotes behavioral change but also fosters a deeper understanding of how energy use affects both individual costs and the broader system.
For members interested in sustainability, TCEC offers a voluntary renewable energy program, providing 100% renewable power sourced from wind or solar generation. Participants pay a small additional charge and receive Renewable Energy Credits (RECs), allowing them to support clean energy without investing in personal infrastructure.
Electric vehicle adoption is another area where TCEC is enhancing the member experience. Through its Electric Vehicle Rider, the cooperative incentivizes overnight charging by offering designated low-cost charging periods. Members who install approved Level 2 chargers can take advantage of reduced rates during late-night hours, aligning energy use with lower demand periods. This approach also supports grid stability while making EV ownership more accessible and cost-effective for rural consumers.
Behind the scenes, TCEC has invested heavily in infrastructure to improve service reliability and transparency. The deployment of a two-way Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) system across its service territory enables real-time communication between the cooperative and its meters. This technology allows for more accurate billing, faster outage detection and improved customer support.
With AMI, members benefit from enhanced access to detailed energy usage information, including consumption patterns and outage history. This not only helps reduce billing questions but also empowers members to make more informed decisions about their energy use. Additionally, improved outage management capabilities ensure quicker response times and better communication during service interruptions – critical factors in maintaining trust and satisfaction.
TCEC’s community solar program highlights its commitment to accessibility and innovation. Launched in 2015 as the first utility-led project of its kind in Oklahoma, the program allows members to subscribe to a shared solar array and receive monthly bill credits based on energy production.
By removing barriers such as upfront costs, maintenance and site limitations, the program makes renewable energy available to more members, regardless of property type or location. By simplifying access to clean energy, TCEC strengthens its connection with members who value sustainability while maintaining affordability and convenience.
As member expectations evolve, TCEC continues to lead in innovation and service. By combining advanced technology with flexible programs and a strong member-first philosophy, the cooperative is meeting today’s energy needs while building stronger connections for the future.
